Description
Yoshinoya Beef Bowl, or Gyudon, is a classic Japanese dish featuring thinly sliced beef simmered in a savory-sweet sauce with onions, served over steaming hot rice. This comforting and satisfying bowl offers a perfect balance of flavors and textures, making it an ideal quick dinner or lunch option.
Ingredients
Beef and Sauce
- 300g thinly sliced beef
- 1 onion, sliced
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp mirin (optional)
- 1 tsp grated ginger
Rice
- 2 cups cooked rice
Instructions
- Prepare the Sauce: In a pan, combine the beef broth, soy sauce, sugar, mirin, and grated ginger. Stir the mixture to dissolve the sugar and blend all flavors together.
- Sauté the Onions: Add the sliced onions to the sauce mixture and simmer on medium heat until the onions become soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
- Cook the Beef: Add the thinly sliced beef to the pan with the sauce and onions. Cook gently, stirring occasionally, until the beef is just cooked through but remains tender, approximately 4-5 minutes.
- Serve: Spoon hot steamed rice into bowls and ladle the beef and onion mixture with the savory sauce over the rice. Serve immediately to enjoy the warm and comforting flavors.
Notes
- Top with a soft boiled or poached egg for authentic Gyudon experience.
- Use very thin beef slices (such as eye round or ribeye) for best texture and quick cooking.
- You can adjust the soy sauce and sugar quantities to suit your taste preference for sweetness or saltiness.
