Description

A rich and hearty slow cooker casserole made with tender steak, creamy potatoes, and melted cheddar cheese. This comforting dish is perfect for hands-off cooking and satisfying family meals, combining layers of seasoned steak, sliced potatoes, and cheddar cheese infused with a flavorful broth and cream mixture.

Ingredients

Steak and Vegetables

  • 500 g steak, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Dairy and Cheese

  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup cream or milk

Liquids and Seasonings

  • 1 cup beef broth
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. Prepare the slow cooker: Lightly grease the slow cooker insert with butter or non-stick spray to prevent sticking during cooking.
  2. Layer the ingredients: Start by layering half of the thinly sliced potatoes evenly at the bottom of the slow cooker. Follow with half the steak pieces, then sliced onion, and sprinkle half the shredded cheddar cheese on top.
  3. Repeat layering: Add the remaining potatoes, followed by the rest of the steak, onion, and finish layering with the remaining shredded cheddar cheese to build up the casserole.
  4. Mix the liquid seasoning: In a separate bowl, whisk together the beef broth, cream or milk, minced garlic, paprika, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
  5. Pour over casserole: Evenly pour the broth and cream mixture over the layered ingredients inside the slow cooker, ensuring it seeps through all layers to provide moisture and flavor.
  6. Cook the casserole: Cover the slow cooker with its lid and cook on low heat for 6 to 7 hours or on high heat for 3 to 4 hours, until the potatoes are tender and the steak is cooked through.
  7. Check for doneness: Before serving, insert a fork into the potatoes to confirm they are soft and cooked through. Adjust cooking time if necessary.
  8. Rest before serving: Allow the casserole to rest for a few minutes with the lid off or slightly ajar to let it set and enhance the texture before serving.

Notes

  • Use a well-marbled cut of steak to ensure tenderness and flavor.
  • For extra flavor and texture, consider adding mushrooms or bell peppers layered with the steak and vegetables.
  • Let the casserole rest for a few minutes after cooking to help the layers set and improve slicing and serving.
