Description

Sesame Chicken Lettuce Wraps are a light and flavorful meal featuring tender ground chicken cooked with crunchy vegetables in a savory sesame-soy sauce, all wrapped in fresh, crisp butter lettuce leaves. This quick and easy recipe makes a perfect lunch or dinner option that is both satisfying and healthy.

Ingredients

Protein and Vegetables

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground chicken
  • 1/2 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, finely diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 cup shredded carrots
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 12 butter lettuce leaves

Sauce and Seasonings

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil (plus 1 teaspoon for sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, cornstarch, and water. Stir well until the cornstarch is fully dissolved to create a smooth sauce mixture.
  2. Cook the chicken: Heat 1 tablespoon sesame oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground chicken and cook for 6 to 8 minutes, breaking it apart with a spatula until fully cooked and no longer pink.
  3. Add vegetables: Stir in the finely diced onion and red bell pepper and cook for 3 minutes until they begin to soften.
  4. Add aromatics: Add minced garlic and grated ginger to the skillet and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  5. Pour in the sauce: Pour the prepared sauce over the chicken and vegetables. Stir well to coat everything evenly.
  6. Simmer: Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens and clings to the chicken mixture.
  7. Finish with carrots: Stir the shredded carrots into the skillet to add crunch and color.
  8. Assemble wraps: Spoon the chicken mixture evenly into the butter lettuce leaves, using them as cups to hold the filling.
  9. Garnish and serve: Sprinkle sliced green onions and sesame seeds on top of each wrap. Serve immediately for the freshest taste and crunch.

Notes

  • Add chopped water chestnuts to the filling for extra crunch and texture.
  • Substitute ground turkey instead of chicken for a leaner option.
  • Include sriracha or chili flakes in the sauce for a spicy kick.
  • Serve with steamed rice if you want a more filling meal.
