Description

These Meatball Subs are loaded with tender Italian-style meatballs, rich marinara sauce, and melted mozzarella inside toasted sub rolls. They’re hearty, cheesy, and perfect for an easy lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Meatballs and Sauce

  • 12 Italian-style meatballs, homemade or prepared
  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Bread and Cheese

  • 4 sub rolls
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Optional Garnish

  • Fresh basil leaves

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for melting the cheese and toasting the subs once assembled.
  2. Heat Meatballs in Sauce: In a skillet over medium heat, combine the meatballs and marinara sauce. Heat for 10–15 minutes until the meatballs are warmed through and the sauce is hot and slightly thickened.
  3. Prepare the Rolls: Slice the sub rolls lengthwise without cutting all the way through to create a hinge for easy filling.
  4. Brush Bread with Olive Oil: Lightly brush the inside of each roll with olive oil to help prevent sogginess and to add flavor.
  5. Fill the Subs: Place 3 meatballs into each sub roll and spoon plenty of marinara sauce over the meatballs for a juicy sandwich.
  6. Add Cheese: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan evenly over the meatballs inside each roll.
  7. Bake the Subs: Arrange the sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 5–7 minutes until the cheese has melted and is bubbly.
  8. Finish and Serve: Remove from oven, sprinkle Italian seasoning and fresh basil on top if desired, and serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Homemade or frozen meatballs both work well for this recipe.
  • Toasting the bread first helps prevent soggy sandwiches and adds a nice crunch.
  • Add sautéed onions or peppers to the meatball filling for extra flavor and texture.
  • Use provolone or a mozzarella-provolone blend as a variation for a different cheesy taste.
