Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
Wet Ingredients
- ¾ cup warm water
For Frying
- Vegetable oil, for frying (enough to heat 2 inches deep in the skillet)
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
- Add Water and Form Dough: Gradually pour warm water into the dry ingredients, mixing as you go until a soft dough forms that is slightly sticky but manageable.
- Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for 2–3 minutes to develop elasticity without overworking.
- Rest the Dough: Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rest at room temperature for 15 minutes to relax the gluten.
- Divide and Shape: Divide the rested dough into 6 equal portions. Flatten each portion into a round shape about ¼ inch thick, ensuring an even thickness for uniform cooking.
- Heat Oil: In a deep skillet or heavy pan, heat approximately 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy.
- Fry the Bread: Carefully place each dough round into the hot oil, frying one or two pieces at a time to avoid overcrowding. Fry for 1–2 minutes on each side until the bread is puffed and golden brown.
- Drain: Use a slotted spoon to remove fry bread and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Serve Warm: Serve the fry bread warm with your choice of sweet toppings like honey or cinnamon sugar, or savory toppings such as taco fillings or beans.
Notes
- Serve fry bread with honey, cinnamon sugar, or savory taco toppings for versatile flavor options.
- Do not overcrowd the pan while frying to maintain oil temperature and crispiness.
- The dough can be prepared ahead and refrigerated for several hours; bring to room temperature before frying.
