Description

This Honey Garlic Chicken is a quick and flavorful dinner featuring tender chicken pieces coated in a sticky, homemade honey garlic sauce. Cooked in one skillet in about 30 minutes, it’s a perfect weeknight meal served over rice with steamed vegetables for a delightful and satisfying Asian-inspired dish.

Ingredients

Chicken and Seasoning

  • 1 1/2 lbs (680 g) boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Sauce

  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water (to mix with cornstarch)

Garnish

  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 2 green onions, sliced

Instructions

  1. Prepare Chicken: Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces, then season evenly with salt and black pepper to enhance the flavor.
  2. Cook Chicken: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken pieces and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally until the chicken is golden brown and fully cooked through.
  3. Add Garlic: Reduce heat to medium, add the minced garlic to the skillet, and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  4. Make Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together honey, soy sauce, 2 tablespoons water, rice vinegar, and grated fresh ginger thoroughly to combine all the flavors.
  5. Simmer Sauce: Pour the prepared sauce into the skillet with the chicken and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer to allow the flavors to meld.
  6. Thicken Sauce: Mix cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water until smooth, then stir this slurry into the skillet. Continue cooking for 2–3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens and coats the chicken nicely.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat and garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Serve immediately over jasmine rice or alongside steamed vegetables for a delicious meal.

Notes

  • Chicken thighs stay especially juicy and flavorful, but chicken breasts work well too if preferred.
  • Add red pepper flakes or a dash of sriracha for a spicy kick.
  • Using low-sodium soy sauce helps control the saltiness of the dish.
  • Perfect served with jasmine rice, brown rice, noodles, or steamed broccoli for a complete meal.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
