This versatile recipe offers two cooking methods—grilling for a classic smoky flavor or baking for a simple weeknight meal, making it an ideal dish for quick and flavorful dinners with minimal prep.
Ingredients
Chicken
- 1½ lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
Honey BBQ Sauce
- ¾ cup BBQ sauce
- ¼ cup honey
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- ½ tsp smoked paprika
- ¼ tsp garlic powder
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Chicken: Pat the chicken dry with paper towels and place in a large bowl. Rub the chicken evenly with olive oil, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder to season thoroughly.
- Make the Honey BBQ Sauce: In a separate bowl, whisk together BBQ sauce, honey, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, garlic powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper if using. Mix until smooth and well combined.
- Coat the Chicken: Reserve about ¼ cup of the honey BBQ sauce for serving later. Toss the chicken in the remaining sauce until well coated.
- Grill the Chicken: Preheat your grill to medium heat, approximately 375–400°F (190–200°C). Place the coated chicken on the grill and cook for 5–7 minutes per side. During the last few minutes of grilling, brush additional sauce over the chicken to maximize flavor without burning the honey.
- Bake the Chicken (Alternative Method): If baking, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the coated chicken in a lightly greased baking dish and bake for 20–25 minutes. Halfway through, brush more sauce over the chicken to keep it moist and flavorful. Bake until the thickest part reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- Rest and Serve: Remove the chicken from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute. Slice and serve the chicken with the reserved honey BBQ sauce on the side for dipping or drizzling.
Notes
- Use chicken thighs for a juicier and more flavorful result.
- Increase the amount of cayenne pepper to add heat if desired.
- Be cautious when adding sauce early over high heat to avoid burning the honey.
- Pair this dish with sides like coleslaw, grilled vegetables, corn on the cob, or baked potatoes for a complete meal.
