Description

These homemade Apple Pies feature a flaky golden crust filled with tender cinnamon-spiced apples. Perfect for dessert, holidays, or an anytime sweet treat, these hand pies are easy to make and delicious served warm with vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Pie Crust

  • 2 refrigerated pie crusts

Filling

  • 5 medium apples, peeled and diced
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Topping

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it is hot enough to bake the pies evenly.
  2. Prepare Filling: In a large bowl, combine the peeled and diced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, cornstarch, and lemon juice. Mix thoroughly to coat the apples and create a spiced filling.
  3. Shape Pies: Roll out the refrigerated pie crusts and cut them into circles of desired size. Place a spoonful of the apple filling in the center of each circle.
  4. Seal Edges: Fold each pie crust circle over to enclose the filling and seal the edges by pressing with a fork to prevent filling from leaking during baking.
  5. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the tops of the pies with the beaten egg to give them a shiny, golden finish once baked. Optionally, sprinkle coarse sugar on top for added texture and sweetness.
  6. Bake Pies: Arrange the hand pies on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes until the crust is golden brown and crisp.
  7. Cool and Serve: Allow the pies to cool slightly before serving. They are delicious warm, especially when served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples work best for the perfect balance of tartness and sweetness.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream for a classic dessert experience.
  • You can freeze the unbaked pies for up to 3 months; just bake them directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the bake time.
