Description
A golden, crispy calzone stuffed with melty mozzarella, creamy ricotta, savory fillings, and tangy tomato sauce — an easy homemade twist on the classic Italian favorite perfect for a satisfying meal.
Ingredients
Dough
- 1 pizza dough
Cheeses
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
Fillings & Sauce
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup cooked fillings (pepperoni, vegetables, or chicken)
Seasoning & Finishing
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) to ensure it’s hot enough to crisp the calzone’s crust perfectly.
- Prepare Dough: Roll out the pizza dough into evenly sized circles, roughly 8-10 inches in diameter, to form the base of your calzones.
- Add Cheeses: Spread the ricotta and mozzarella cheese on one half of each dough circle, leaving room at the edges for sealing.
- Add Fillings: Top the cheeses with your choice of cooked fillings such as pepperoni, vegetables, or chicken, then add a spoonful of tomato sauce over the fillings.
- Fold and Seal: Carefully fold the dough over the fillings to create a half-moon shape. Press and crimp the edges firmly to seal and prevent leaking during baking.
- Brush and Season: Brush the top of each calzone with olive oil and sprinkle with Italian seasoning to enhance flavor and promote golden browning.
- Bake: Place the calzones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in the preheated oven for 18–20 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
Notes
- Serve with extra tomato sauce on the side for dipping.
- Avoid overfilling the calzones to prevent the fillings from leaking out while baking.
- You can customize fillings to your preference, including vegetables or cooked meats.
