Ingredients
Chicken and Seasoning
- 2 lbs (900 g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Cooking Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup barbecue sauce
- ½ cup chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
Instructions
- Season the Chicken: In a small bowl, mix paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Rub this spice blend evenly over the chicken breasts or thighs to coat thoroughly.
- Brown the Chicken: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat, or prepare your slow cooker insert. Lightly brown the chicken pieces on all sides for about 3-4 minutes per side until a golden crust forms, enhancing flavor.
- Add Sauce and Liquids: Pour in the barbecue sauce, chicken broth, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar over the browned chicken in the skillet or slow cooker.
- Simmer or Slow Cook: If using the stovetop, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer the chicken for 25–30 minutes until it is tender and cooked through. If using a slow cooker, cover and cook on LOW for 4–5 hours until chicken is very tender and shreds easily.
- Shred the Chicken: Remove the chicken from the cooking vessel and use two forks to shred the meat into bite-sized pieces.
- Combine and Serve: Return the shredded chicken to the sauce and stir well to absorb the flavors. Serve warm on buns, over rice, or in tacos for a delicious meal.
Notes
