Description

Chocolate Pudding Cake is a decadent dessert that perfectly balances a soft, moist cake layer on top with a luscious, warm chocolate pudding beneath. As it bakes, the cake forms a rich chocolate sauce that complements the tender crumb, making it an irresistible treat perfect for serving with ice cream or whipped cream.

Ingredients

Cake Batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Topping

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 1/4 cups hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Stir well to evenly distribute the ingredients.
  3. Add wet ingredients: Pour in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract into the dry mixture. Stir gently until the batter is smooth and fully combined without lumps.
  4. Spread batter: Pour and spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish, creating a smooth surface.
  5. Prepare topping: In a separate small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cocoa powder until well combined.
  6. Add topping to batter: Sprinkle the brown sugar and cocoa powder mixture evenly over the surface of the batter in the baking dish.
  7. Pour hot water: Carefully and slowly pour the hot water over the top of the sugar mixture without stirring to maintain layers and enable the pudding effect.
  8. Bake: Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes. The top should be set like cake, but the bottom will remain a warm, creamy pudding.
  9. Serve: Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly. Serve warm, preferably with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgent touch.

Notes

  • Do not stir the mixture after pouring the hot water; this separation creates the pudding layer.
  • For best texture and flavor, serve warm shortly after baking.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before serving.
