A warm and comforting casserole made with tender potatoes, fresh broccoli, and a rich, cheesy sauce baked until golden and bubbly. This dish serves as a perfect side or a hearty vegetarian main, combining simple ingredients for a cozy, satisfying meal.
Ingredients
Vegetables
- 3 cups potatoes, thinly sliced
- 2 cups broccoli florets
Cheese Sauce
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) to prepare for baking the casserole.
- Cook Potatoes: Boil the thinly sliced potatoes in water for 5–7 minutes until they are slightly tender but not fully cooked, then drain well.
- Prepare Broccoli: Steam or blanch the broccoli florets for 2–3 minutes to soften them while retaining their bright green color and crispness.
- Make Cheese Sauce: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant. Stir in the flour and cook for about 1 minute to form a roux.
- Add Milk: Gradually whisk in the milk, continuing to stir until the sauce thickens smoothly.
- Add Cheese: Remove the sauce from heat and stir in half of the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Assemble Casserole: In a baking dish, layer the cooked potatoes and broccoli evenly. Pour the cheese sauce over the vegetables, then sprinkle the remaining cheese evenly on top.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25–30 minutes until the top is golden brown and the sauce is bubbling.
Notes
- Add breadcrumbs on top before baking for a crispy crust.
- Swap cheddar cheese with mozzarella or a cheese blend for different flavors.
- Ensure potatoes are not fully cooked before baking to avoid mushy texture.
