Description

Rich and savory with a touch of sweetness, this creamy Caramelized Onion Dip is a crowd-pleasing favorite perfect for parties and snacks.

Ingredients

Onion Base

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Dip Mixture

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over low heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook slowly for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden brown and develop a rich, sweet flavor.
  2. Cool Onions: Remove the skillet from heat and allow the caramelized onions to cool to room temperature; this prevents curdling when mixed with the dairy ingredients.
  3. Combine Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the cooled onions with sour cream, mayonnaise, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well until all ingredients are fully incorporated.
  4. Chill Before Serving: Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow flavors to meld and the dip to thicken. For best results, make a day ahead to deepen the flavor.

Notes

  • Best made a day ahead—flavor deepens over time.
  • For a lighter dip, substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream.
