Ingredients
Beef and Broccoli
- 1 lb (450 g) flank steak, thinly sliced
- 4 cups broccoli florets
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
- 2 green onions, sliced
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
Sauce
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
Thickener
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
Instructions
- Prepare the sauce. In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, and sesame oil until well combined to create the flavorful stir-fry sauce.
- Make the cornstarch slurry. In a separate bowl, mix the cornstarch and water until smooth to use as a thickening agent for the sauce later.
- Cook the beef. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the thinly sliced beef in a single layer and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until browned. If necessary, cook in batches to avoid overcrowding. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.
- Stir-fry the broccoli. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil to the skillet, then add the broccoli florets. Stir-fry for 3 to 4 minutes until they turn bright green and are tender-crisp.
- Add aromatics. Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for about 30 seconds until fragrant but not burnt.
- Combine beef and sauce. Return the cooked beef to the skillet and pour in the prepared sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Thicken the sauce. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook for an additional 1 to 2 minutes until the sauce has thickened to a glossy consistency that coats the beef and broccoli.
- Garnish and serve. Remove from heat and sprinkle sliced green onions and sesame seeds over the dish. Serve immediately over steamed rice for a complete meal.
Notes
- Slice the beef thinly against the grain to ensure maximum tenderness.
- Placing the flank steak in the freezer for 15–20 minutes before slicing helps achieve thin, even cuts.
- Feel free to add extra vegetables like carrots, bell peppers, or snap peas for more color and nutrition.
- Use tamari instead of soy sauce for a gluten-free version of this dish.
