Description

This easy Beef and Broccoli recipe delivers tender flank steak and crisp broccoli florets in a savory, garlic-ginger stir-fry sauce. Perfect for a quick and tasty weeknight dinner, it comes together in under 30 minutes and pairs beautifully with steamed rice to replicate a classic Chinese-American takeout favorite at home.

Ingredients

Beef and Broccoli

  • 1 lb (450 g) flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 4 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Thickener

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce. In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, and sesame oil until well combined to create the flavorful stir-fry sauce.
  2. Make the cornstarch slurry. In a separate bowl, mix the cornstarch and water until smooth to use as a thickening agent for the sauce later.
  3. Cook the beef. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the thinly sliced beef in a single layer and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until browned. If necessary, cook in batches to avoid overcrowding. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.
  4. Stir-fry the broccoli. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil to the skillet, then add the broccoli florets. Stir-fry for 3 to 4 minutes until they turn bright green and are tender-crisp.
  5. Add aromatics. Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for about 30 seconds until fragrant but not burnt.
  6. Combine beef and sauce. Return the cooked beef to the skillet and pour in the prepared sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer, allowing the flavors to meld.
  7. Thicken the sauce. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook for an additional 1 to 2 minutes until the sauce has thickened to a glossy consistency that coats the beef and broccoli.
  8. Garnish and serve. Remove from heat and sprinkle sliced green onions and sesame seeds over the dish. Serve immediately over steamed rice for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Slice the beef thinly against the grain to ensure maximum tenderness.
  • Placing the flank steak in the freezer for 15–20 minutes before slicing helps achieve thin, even cuts.
  • Feel free to add extra vegetables like carrots, bell peppers, or snap peas for more color and nutrition.
  • Use tamari instead of soy sauce for a gluten-free version of this dish.
