Ingredients
Protein and Oil
- 1 lb (450 g) ground chicken
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
Vegetables and Aromatics
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
- 1/2 cup finely diced mushrooms
- 1/2 cup shredded carrots
- 1/4 cup diced water chestnuts
- 2 green onions, sliced
- 1 head butter lettuce or romaine lettuce
Sauces and Seasonings
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes, optional
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
Instructions
- Heat the oil: Heat sesame oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat to prepare the base for sautéing your ingredients.
- Sauté onions: Add the finely diced onion and cook for 2–3 minutes until they soften and become translucent, building flavor for the filling.
- Cook chicken: Add the ground chicken to the skillet and cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it apart with a spatula, until it is browned and cooked through.
- Add aromatics: Stir in minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for about 30 seconds until fragrant without burning.
- Add vegetables: Mix in the diced mushrooms, shredded carrots, and water chestnuts. Cook for 3–4 minutes until the vegetables are tender yet retain a crisp texture.
- Incorporate sauces: Add soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, honey, and optional chili flakes. Stir well to evenly coat the mixture and cook an additional 2 minutes to meld the flavors.
- Assemble wraps: Spoon the chicken and vegetable mixture into individual butter or romaine lettuce leaves creating handheld wraps.
- Garnish and serve: Top each wrap with sliced green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Serve immediately for best texture and freshness.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey for ground chicken for a different protein option.
- For added crunch, try mixing in chopped peanuts or cashews before serving.
- Use tamari instead of soy sauce to make this recipe gluten-free.
- Add sriracha or additional chili flakes for more spiciness based on your preference.
