Description

These Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps are a delightful combination of savory ground chicken, fresh crunchy vegetables, aromatic garlic and ginger, all tossed in a flavorful Asian-inspired sauce. Wrapped in crisp butter or romaine lettuce leaves, they offer a light and healthy meal option perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or appetizer.

Ingredients

Protein and Oil

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground chicken
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

Vegetables and Aromatics

  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 cup finely diced mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup shredded carrots
  • 1/4 cup diced water chestnuts
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1 head butter lettuce or romaine lettuce

Sauces and Seasonings

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes, optional
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil: Heat sesame oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat to prepare the base for sautéing your ingredients.
  2. Sauté onions: Add the finely diced onion and cook for 2–3 minutes until they soften and become translucent, building flavor for the filling.
  3. Cook chicken: Add the ground chicken to the skillet and cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it apart with a spatula, until it is browned and cooked through.
  4. Add aromatics: Stir in minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for about 30 seconds until fragrant without burning.
  5. Add vegetables: Mix in the diced mushrooms, shredded carrots, and water chestnuts. Cook for 3–4 minutes until the vegetables are tender yet retain a crisp texture.
  6. Incorporate sauces: Add soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, honey, and optional chili flakes. Stir well to evenly coat the mixture and cook an additional 2 minutes to meld the flavors.
  7. Assemble wraps: Spoon the chicken and vegetable mixture into individual butter or romaine lettuce leaves creating handheld wraps.
  8. Garnish and serve: Top each wrap with sliced green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Serve immediately for best texture and freshness.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey for ground chicken for a different protein option.
  • For added crunch, try mixing in chopped peanuts or cashews before serving.
  • Use tamari instead of soy sauce to make this recipe gluten-free.
  • Add sriracha or additional chili flakes for more spiciness based on your preference.
