Description

Sweet crisp apples and sharp cheddar cheese come together in this delicious grilled cheese sandwich that perfectly balances savory and sweet flavors, making it a perfect gourmet lunch option.

Ingredients

Bread and Spread

  • 4 slices sourdough bread
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)

Filling

  • 1 large apple, thinly sliced
  • 4 oz sharp cheddar cheese, sliced

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread: Butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread evenly. If using Dijon mustard, spread it on the unbuttered side of each slice to add a tangy layer of flavor.
  2. Assemble the sandwich: Place slices of sharp cheddar cheese on the non-buttered side of two slices of bread. Arrange the thinly sliced apples evenly on top of the cheese, then top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side facing out.
  3. Heat the skillet: Place a skillet or frying pan over medium heat and allow it to warm up fully to ensure even toasting of the bread.
  4. Cook the sandwich: Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet. Cook for about 3 to 4 minutes on each side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheddar cheese has melted thoroughly.
  5. Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve immediately while warm to enjoy the melty cheese and crisp apples at their best.

Notes

  • Honeycrisp and Granny Smith apples are excellent choices for their balance of tartness and sweetness that complements the cheddar.
  • For an extra flavor boost, add cooked bacon slices inside the sandwich before grilling.
