Ingredients
Base Ingredients
- 2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, sliced or grated
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 whole cloves
- 1 star anise (optional)
Citrus & Sweeteners
- Zest and juice of ½ orange
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1–2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (to taste)
Optional Spices
- Pinch of turmeric or cayenne (optional)
Instructions
- Add spices and water: Place the water, fresh ginger, cinnamon stick, cloves, and star anise (if using) into a small saucepan.
- Simmer the mixture: Bring the contents to a gentle boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes to infuse the flavors.
- Strain the tonic: Remove the saucepan from heat and strain the liquid into mugs to remove the spices and ginger pieces.
- Add citrus and sweetener: Stir in the orange juice, lemon juice, and honey or maple syrup to your preferred level of sweetness.
- Adjust taste and serve: Taste the tonic and adjust the sweetness or spice by adding a pinch of turmeric or cayenne if desired. Serve warm immediately.
