Ingredients
Apple Filling
- 5–6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and sliced
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 tbsp flour or cornstarch
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Oat Crisp Topping
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8-inch or similar baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Prepare Apple Filling: In a large bowl, toss the peeled and sliced apples with lemon juice, brown sugar, flour (or cornstarch), cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract until evenly coated.
- Arrange Apples: Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish, ensuring an even layer for consistent baking.
- Make Oat Topping: In another bowl, combine rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Cut in the cold cubed butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture becomes crumbly and resembles coarse crumbs.
- Top the Apples: Evenly sprinkle the oat topping mixture over the apples, covering them completely.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the oat topping is golden brown and crisp.
- Serve: Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgent dessert.
Notes
- Use a mix of apple varieties for a balanced sweet and tart flavor.
- Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the oat topping for added crunch and texture.
- This dish can be prepared ahead and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before baking.
- To make it gluten-free, use oat flour and certified gluten-free oats instead of all-purpose flour.
