Description

Thai Basil Beef Rolls are a fresh and flavorful dish featuring tender beef wrapped in rice paper with aromatic Thai basil, fresh vegetables, and a savory dipping sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 810 rice paper wrappers
  • 1/2 cup Thai basil leaves, whole
  • 1 medium carrot, julienned
  • 1 cucumber, julienned
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves (optional)
  • For the Dipping Sauce:
  • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili garlic sauce (optional, for heat)
  • 1 teaspoon chopped peanuts (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef: In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, fish sauce, brown sugar, garlic, and ginger. Toss the thinly sliced beef in the marinade and let it sit for at least 10–15 minutes.
  2. Cook the Beef: Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef and cook for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is cooked through and browned. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
  3. Prepare the Veggies: Julienne the carrot and cucumber into thin strips. Set aside along with the Thai basil and cilantro.
  4. Soften the Rice Paper: Fill a shallow dish with warm water. Dip one rice paper wrapper into the water for about 10-15 seconds, or until soft and pliable. Lay it flat on a clean surface.
  5. Assemble the Rolls: Place 2–3 basil leaves in the center of the rice paper, followed by a few strips of cooked beef, carrot, cucumber, and cilantro.
  6. Roll the Wrap: Carefully fold the sides of the rice paper over the filling, then roll tightly from the bottom, ensuring the filling stays enclosed. Repeat with the remaining rice paper and ingredients.
  7. Prepare the Dipping Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, lime juice, sesame oil, and chili garlic sauce (if using).
  8. Serve: Serve the Thai Basil Beef Rolls with the dipping sauce and optional chopped peanuts for garnish. Enjoy immediately!

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, replace the beef with tofu or tempeh, marinated and sautéed in the same way.
  • These rolls can be customized with other vegetables like bell peppers, cabbage, or avocado.
  • If you prefer more heat, increase the chili garlic sauce in the dipping sauce or add fresh chili peppers inside the rolls.
  • If you prefer a creamy dipping sauce, swap hoisin sauce with peanut butter for a peanut butter dipping sauce.
