Description
Thai Basil Beef Rolls are a fresh and flavorful dish featuring tender beef wrapped in rice paper with aromatic Thai basil, fresh vegetables, and a savory dipping sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon fish sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 8–10 rice paper wrappers
- 1/2 cup Thai basil leaves, whole
- 1 medium carrot, julienned
- 1 cucumber, julienned
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves (optional)
- For the Dipping Sauce:
- 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon lime juice
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/2 teaspoon chili garlic sauce (optional, for heat)
- 1 teaspoon chopped peanuts (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the Beef: In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, fish sauce, brown sugar, garlic, and ginger. Toss the thinly sliced beef in the marinade and let it sit for at least 10–15 minutes.
- Cook the Beef: Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef and cook for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is cooked through and browned. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
- Prepare the Veggies: Julienne the carrot and cucumber into thin strips. Set aside along with the Thai basil and cilantro.
- Soften the Rice Paper: Fill a shallow dish with warm water. Dip one rice paper wrapper into the water for about 10-15 seconds, or until soft and pliable. Lay it flat on a clean surface.
- Assemble the Rolls: Place 2–3 basil leaves in the center of the rice paper, followed by a few strips of cooked beef, carrot, cucumber, and cilantro.
- Roll the Wrap: Carefully fold the sides of the rice paper over the filling, then roll tightly from the bottom, ensuring the filling stays enclosed. Repeat with the remaining rice paper and ingredients.
- Prepare the Dipping Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, lime juice, sesame oil, and chili garlic sauce (if using).
- Serve: Serve the Thai Basil Beef Rolls with the dipping sauce and optional chopped peanuts for garnish. Enjoy immediately!
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, replace the beef with tofu or tempeh, marinated and sautéed in the same way.
- These rolls can be customized with other vegetables like bell peppers, cabbage, or avocado.
- If you prefer more heat, increase the chili garlic sauce in the dipping sauce or add fresh chili peppers inside the rolls.
- If you prefer a creamy dipping sauce, swap hoisin sauce with peanut butter for a peanut butter dipping sauce.
