Description

Strawberry Danish is a delightful pastry with a rich, flaky puff pastry, creamy filling, and a sweet strawberry topping. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a special treat, this easy-to-make dessert is sure to impress with its perfect balance of buttery crust and fruity sweetness.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (to make a slurry)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (or more to reach desired consistency)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface and cut it into 6 squares (or rectangles, depending on your preferred size).
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash. Brush the edges of each pastry square with the egg wash.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and creamy.
  5. Spoon a generous amount of the cream cheese filling into the center of each pastry square and spread it evenly.
  6. Fold the corners of each square toward the center, creating a pocket with the cream cheese in the middle. Brush the edges with more egg wash.
  7. Bake the pastries for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.
  8. While the pastries are baking, prepare the strawberry topping. In a small saucepan, combine the sliced strawberries, sugar, lemon juice, and cornstarch slurry. Cook over medium heat for 4-5 minutes until thickened and glossy. Remove from heat and set aside.
  9. Once the pastries are baked, remove them from the oven and cool for 10 minutes.
  10. Drizzle the strawberry syrup over the pastries, and mix the glaze ingredients in a small bowl. Drizzle the glaze over the pastries for an extra layer of sweetness.

Notes

  • For a mixed berry Danish, swap the strawberries with raspberries or blueberries.
  • Almond paste or ground almonds can be added to the cream cheese filling for a nutty flavor.
  • Try swapping the strawberries for peaches or apricots for a different fruit-filled Danish option.
  • For a vegan version, use plant-based cream cheese and dairy-free puff pastry.
