Ingredients
Steak & Onions
- 4 beef steaks (sirloin, ribeye, or strip)
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tsp fresh thyme or rosemary
Herb Mashed Potatoes
- 3 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- ¾–1 cup warm milk or cream
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
- 1 tbsp chopped chives or thyme
Instructions
- Prepare Herb Mashed Potatoes: Place peeled and cubed Yukon Gold potatoes in a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook for 15–18 minutes until fork-tender. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add unsalted butter and mash until melted and smooth. Gradually stir in warm milk or cream until the potatoes reach your desired creamy consistency. Mix in salt, black pepper, and freshly chopped herbs such as parsley and chives or thyme. Cover to keep warm.
- Caramelize Onions: Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add thinly sliced onions and cook slowly for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden and deeply caramelized. Stir in fresh thyme or rosemary and season lightly with salt to enhance their natural sweetness.
- Cook Steaks: Season the steaks evenly with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Heat olive oil in a separate skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the steaks for 3–5 minutes on each side, adjusting time based on thickness and preferred level of doneness, to achieve a flavorful crust. Remove steaks and let them rest for 5 minutes to retain juices.
- Assemble and Serve: Spoon a generous portion of herb mashed potatoes onto each plate. Place a rested steak on top, then crown it with a generous helping of the caramelized onions. Serve immediately to enjoy the perfect blend of textures and flavors.
Notes
- Allow steaks to rest after cooking to retain maximum juiciness and tenderness.
- For deeper flavor in caramelized onions, add a splash of beef broth or red wine during cooking.
- Ribeye steaks provide the richest and most flavorful experience due to their marbling.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
