This homemade bread recipe creates a soft and fluffy loaf that’s perfect for any occasion. Whether used for sandwiches or enjoyed fresh out of the oven, it offers a delicious, rich texture from warm milk, yeast, eggs, and butter.
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cup warm milk (110 degrees Fahrenheit)
- 1 cup granulated sugar (divided)
- 2 tsp dry active yeast
- 7 1/4 cups bread flour (spooned and leveled off with a knife)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 6 eggs (+1 egg for egg wash)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and 1/4 cup of sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then add the dry active yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, mix the bread flour and salt. Make a well in the center.
- Add the yeast mixture, eggs, and vanilla extract to the well. Mix until combined.
- Gradually add the remaining 3/4 cup sugar and softened butter. Continue mixing until a dough forms.
- Transfer to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Once risen, punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Shape into a loaf and place in a greased loaf pan.
- Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Beat the remaining egg and brush over the dough for a golden finish.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped and is golden brown on top.
- Cool before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For a cinnamon swirl bread, add a cinnamon-sugar mixture before rolling the dough.
- For a healthier version, substitute half of the bread flour with whole wheat flour.
