Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 3 large onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 cup beef broth (or chicken broth)
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (optional, for thickening)
Instructions
- In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add garlic and thyme to the onions and cook for another 1–2 minutes.
- Transfer caramelized onions to the slow cooker. Place chicken breasts on top of the onions.
- Pour beef broth and Worcestershire sauce over the chicken. Season with salt and pepper.
- Cover and cook on low for 4–5 hours or on high for 2–3 hours, until chicken is fully cooked (internal temperature 165°F / 74°C).
- If a thicker sauce is desired, mix flour with a small amount of water to form a slurry and stir into the slow cooker. Cook an additional 15–20 minutes.
- Sprinkle shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese over the chicken during the last 15 minutes of cooking to melt.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh thyme or parsley if desired.
