Description

Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken is a comforting, flavorful dish where chicken breasts are cooked low and slow with caramelized onions, beef broth, and melted cheese, capturing the classic flavors of French onion soup in a convenient crockpot meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 cup beef broth (or chicken broth)
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (optional, for thickening)

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Add garlic and thyme to the onions and cook for another 1–2 minutes.
  3. Transfer caramelized onions to the slow cooker. Place chicken breasts on top of the onions.
  4. Pour beef broth and Worcestershire sauce over the chicken. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 4–5 hours or on high for 2–3 hours, until chicken is fully cooked (internal temperature 165°F / 74°C).
  6. If a thicker sauce is desired, mix flour with a small amount of water to form a slurry and stir into the slow cooker. Cook an additional 15–20 minutes.
  7. Sprinkle shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese over the chicken during the last 15 minutes of cooking to melt.
  8. Serve hot, garnished with fresh thyme or parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Caramelizing the onions before adding them to the slow cooker enhances the flavor.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread to soak up the flavorful sauce.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
