Description

Tender pan-seared steaks smothered in rich, homemade onion gravy, creating a classic American comfort food dish. The steaks are seasoned and seared to perfection, then simmered in a caramelized onion gravy that’s hearty and flavorful, perfect for serving over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Ingredients

Steak

  • 4 beef steaks (sirloin, cube steak, or round steak)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter

Onion Gravy

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2½ cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp thyme (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Season Steaks: In a bowl or on a plate, season the steaks evenly with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika to ensure the meat is flavorful.
  2. Sear Steaks: Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steaks and cook each side for 3 to 4 minutes, or until they are browned to your liking. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook Onions: In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook over medium heat for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions are soft and caramelized, which will deepen the gravy’s flavor.
  4. Make Roux: Sprinkle the flour over the caramelized onions and cook for about 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste, stirring constantly to combine well.
  5. Add Broth and Seasonings: Slowly whisk in the beef broth gradually, ensuring the mixture is smooth and free of lumps. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and thyme (if using). Season with salt and pepper to your taste.
  6. Simmer Gravy: Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer and cook for 5 to 7 minutes until it thickens to a gravy consistency.
  7. Combine Steaks and Gravy: Return the seared steaks to the skillet, spoon the gravy generously over the steaks. Cover the skillet and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes more over low heat, until the steaks are tender and fully infused with the onion gravy flavor.
  8. Serve: Serve the steaks hot with gravy spooned over, ideal alongside mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Cube steak works best for ultra-tender results due to its thin, tender cut.
  • For additional depth of flavor, add mushrooms to the onions while caramelizing.
  • Serve this dish with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice to soak up the delicious gravy.
  • Leftovers can be kept refrigerated for up to 3 days; reheat gently on stovetop or microwave.
