Ingredients
Meatballs and Sauce
- 1 lb frozen or homemade meatballs
- 1 jar marinara sauce (about 24 oz)
Bread and Cheese
- 1 loaf Italian bread or rolls, cubed (about 6 cups)
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
Egg Mixture
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the casserole.
- Prepare Bread Base: Spread the cubed Italian bread evenly in a greased baking dish, creating the base layer for the casserole.
- Mix Egg and Seasonings: In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Pour Egg Mixture: Pour the seasoned egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, allowing the bread to absorb the liquid.
- Add Meatballs and Sauce: Arrange the meatballs over the soaked bread, then spoon marinara sauce evenly on top of the meatballs.
- Top with Cheese: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and grated parmesan cheese over the entire casserole for a cheesy crust.
- Bake: Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden and the casserole is heated through.
Notes
- Toast bread cubes before assembling the casserole to prevent sogginess and add extra texture.
- Add red pepper flakes to the egg mixture or sauce for a spicy kick.
- Use homemade meatballs for a fresher taste or your preferred brand of frozen meatballs for convenience.
- Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes after baking for easier serving.
