Description

Indian Fry Bread is a delicious, crispy treat with a soft, pillowy center, perfect for a sweet snack or savory meal with toppings like honey, chili, or taco ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3/4 cup warm water (add more if needed)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (plus more for frying)
  • Optional: Cinnamon sugar, honey, or chili for toppings

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Mix well.
  2. Add the warm water and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to the dry ingredients. Stir until the dough begins to form. If the dough is too dry, add a little more water, a tablespoon at a time, until the dough is soft but not sticky.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 3-5 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  4. Divide the dough into 6-8 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball.
  5. Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium heat.
  6. While the oil is heating, flatten each dough ball into a round disc, about 1/4-inch thick.
  7. Once the oil is hot, carefully place each dough disc into the oil.
  8. Fry the bread for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove the fry bread from the oil and drain it on paper towels. Optionally, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar or drizzle with honey for a sweet treat, or top with savory ingredients like chili, cheese, and lettuce for a taco-style meal.
  10. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Storage: Store leftover fry bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet or oven to regain crispiness.
  • If making ahead, the dough can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Allow it to come to room temperature before frying.
  • For a vegan version, use plant-based oils and milk alternatives like coconut oil or almond milk.
  • Ensure the oil is at the right temperature by testing with a small piece of dough before frying.
  • Mini fry bread can be made by dividing the dough into smaller portions.
