Description
Indian Fry Bread is a delicious, crispy treat with a soft, pillowy center, perfect for a sweet snack or savory meal with toppings like honey, chili, or taco ingredients.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 3/4 cup warm water (add more if needed)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (plus more for frying)
- Optional: Cinnamon sugar, honey, or chili for toppings
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Mix well.
- Add the warm water and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to the dry ingredients. Stir until the dough begins to form. If the dough is too dry, add a little more water, a tablespoon at a time, until the dough is soft but not sticky.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 3-5 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
- Divide the dough into 6-8 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball.
- Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium heat.
- While the oil is heating, flatten each dough ball into a round disc, about 1/4-inch thick.
- Once the oil is hot, carefully place each dough disc into the oil.
- Fry the bread for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the fry bread from the oil and drain it on paper towels. Optionally, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar or drizzle with honey for a sweet treat, or top with savory ingredients like chili, cheese, and lettuce for a taco-style meal.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- Storage: Store leftover fry bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet or oven to regain crispiness.
- If making ahead, the dough can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Allow it to come to room temperature before frying.
- For a vegan version, use plant-based oils and milk alternatives like coconut oil or almond milk.
- Ensure the oil is at the right temperature by testing with a small piece of dough before frying.
- Mini fry bread can be made by dividing the dough into smaller portions.
