Description
Classic sloppy joes made with a rich and slightly sweet homemade sauce, perfect for a quick and comforting family meal featuring ground beef simmered with ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, and garlic powder.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- ½ cup onion, diced
- ½ cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp mustard
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- Salt & pepper to taste
- Hamburger buns for serving
Instructions
- Brown the Beef and Onion: In a skillet over medium heat, cook 1 lb of ground beef together with ½ cup of diced onion until the beef is browned and the onions are softened. Drain any excess fat from the pan to avoid a greasy sauce.
- Add Sauce Ingredients: Stir in ½ cup ketchup, 2 tbsp brown sugar, 1 tbsp mustard, and ½ tsp garlic powder into the browned beef mixture. Mix well to combine all the flavors evenly.
- Simmer the Sauce: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for about 10 minutes. This allows the sauce to thicken and develop a rich, slightly sweet taste.
- Season and Serve: Taste the sloppy joe mixture and season with salt and pepper to your preference. Spoon the savory beef mixture onto hamburger buns and serve immediately while hot.
Notes
- Add diced bell peppers or other vegetables for extra nutrition and texture.
- For a spicier kick, mix in some hot sauce or chili flakes.
- Use whole wheat buns for a healthier option.
- Drain excess grease to reduce fat content.
