Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks:
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend works best)
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (for frying)
For the Onion Gravy:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Hamburger Steaks: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined; do not overwork.
- Form mixture into 4 oval patties.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- Onion Gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter. Add onions and cook for 8–10 minutes until caramelized.
- Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
- Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes.
- Return patties to skillet, spoon gravy over them, and simmer 5–7 minutes until cooked through.
- Serve hot with extra gravy spooned over the top.
