Description

Hamburger Potato Casserole is a comforting and easy-to-make dish featuring layers of seasoned ground beef, thinly sliced potatoes, and a creamy mushroom sauce topped with melted cheddar cheese. This hearty casserole offers a perfect family dinner option packed with rich flavors and a cheesy finish.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups potatoes, thinly sliced

Sauce and Seasonings

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika

Cheese and Oils

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Cooking spray or butter for greasing the dish

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks to ensure even browning.
  3. Sauté Onion and Garlic: Add diced onion to the browned beef and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds to release its aroma.
  4. Season Beef Mixture: Season the beef mixture with salt, black pepper, and paprika. Remove skillet from heat and set aside.
  5. Prepare Soup Mixture: In a separate bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup and milk, stirring until smooth and well blended.
  6. Layer Ingredients: Arrange half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the bottom of the greased baking dish. Spread half of the browned beef mixture over the potatoes, then spoon half of the soup mixture atop the beef. Sprinkle a portion of shredded cheddar cheese over this layer.
  7. Repeat Layers: Repeat with the remaining potatoes, beef mixture, soup mixture, and finish with the remaining cheese sprinkled on top.
  8. Bake Covered: Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 50 minutes to allow the potatoes to cook and flavors to meld.
  9. Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15–20 minutes until the potatoes are tender, and the cheese topping is golden and bubbly.
  10. Rest and Serve: Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes outside the oven before serving to let it set and make serving easier.

Notes

  • Slice potatoes thinly to ensure even and thorough cooking throughout the casserole.
  • You can substitute cream of chicken soup for the cream of mushroom soup if preferred.
  • This casserole reheats well and is perfect for leftovers, maintaining its creamy and flavorful qualities.
