A classic French toast recipe with golden, crispy bread on the outside and a soft, custardy interior. Perfect for breakfast or brunch, topped with maple syrup, fresh fruit, or whipped cream.
Ingredients
- 4 slices bread
- ⅓ cup milk
- 2 large eggs
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- Maple syrup (optional)
Instructions
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, salt, vanilla extract, sugar, and cinnamon until well-combined.
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add the butter, allowing it to melt and coat the surface.
- Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, making sure both sides are well-coated.
- Place the dipped bread slices onto the hot skillet or griddle and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Once cooked, remove the French toast from the skillet and serve immediately with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or your favorite toppings.
Notes
- Berry French Toast: Top with fresh berries and whipped cream for a fruity and indulgent twist.
- Stuffed French Toast: Spread cream cheese or Nutella between two slices of bread for a decadent stuffed version.
- Savory French Toast: Skip the sugar and cinnamon, and add a pinch of salt and pepper for a savory version.
- Vegan French Toast: Replace eggs with a flax egg, use plant-based milk, and vegan butter for a dairy-free option.
- Storage: Store leftover French toast in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
- Reheating: Reheat in a toaster or oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes for crispy results.
