Description
A creamy, savory pasta inspired by classic French onion soup, featuring deeply caramelized onions, rich beef broth, and melted Gruyère cheese for a comforting and flavorful main dish.
Ingredients
Onion Sauce
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter or oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp thyme
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 cup cream or milk
Pasta and Cheese
- 8 oz pasta of choice
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère or mozzarella
- Pepper to taste
Instructions
- Cook Pasta: Prepare the pasta according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet or pan, melt butter over medium heat and add the thinly sliced onions. Cook slowly for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are deeply golden and caramelized.
- Add Flavorings and Broth: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and salt, then pour in the beef broth. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for an additional 5 minutes to meld the flavors.
- Incorporate Cream: Slowly stir in the cream or milk, heating through until the sauce is creamy and slightly thickened.
- Combine Pasta and Cheese: Add the cooked pasta to the skillet with the onion sauce, then mix in the shredded Gruyère or mozzarella. Stir gently until the cheese is melted and the pasta is coated in a creamy, savory sauce. Season with pepper to taste.
Notes
- For best flavor, cook onions low and slow until richly caramelized.
- You can substitute cream with milk or half-and-half to lighten the sauce.
- Use vegetarian broth instead of beef broth to make the dish vegetarian-friendly.
- Gruyère cheese provides classic flavor, but mozzarella works well for a milder taste.
