Description

A simple homemade calzone filled with gooey mozzarella cheese and your favorite fillings like cooked chicken, vegetables, or pepperoni, baked until golden and crispy for a delicious Italian-inspired meal.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Filling

  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce
  • Optional fillings: cooked chicken, vegetables, pepperoni

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, yeast, and salt. Gradually add warm water and olive oil, stirring until a dough forms.
  2. Knead and rise: Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes. Place it in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  3. Shape the dough: Once risen, roll the dough into circles about 8-10 inches in diameter on a floured surface to prevent sticking.
  4. Add fillings: Spread pizza sauce evenly on one half of each dough circle, then sprinkle mozzarella cheese and your choice of optional cooked fillings such as chicken, vegetables, or pepperoni.
  5. Fold and seal: Fold the dough over the fillings to create a half-moon shape. Press and crimp the edges firmly to seal and prevent the filling from leaking during baking.
  6. Bake the calzones: Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Place calzones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  7. Cool and serve: Remove from oven and let cool slightly for about 5 minutes before slicing and serving warm.

Notes

  • Seal edges well to prevent filling leakage during baking.
  • Use a pizza stone or baking steel if available for an even crispier crust.
  • Feel free to customize the fillings as per your taste preferences.
  • For a crispier crust, brush the calzone surface with olive oil before baking.
