Description
A simple homemade calzone filled with gooey mozzarella cheese and your favorite fillings like cooked chicken, vegetables, or pepperoni, baked until golden and crispy for a delicious Italian-inspired meal.
Ingredients
Dough
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp yeast
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 tsp salt
Filling
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce
- Optional fillings: cooked chicken, vegetables, pepperoni
Instructions
- Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, yeast, and salt. Gradually add warm water and olive oil, stirring until a dough forms.
- Knead and rise: Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes. Place it in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled in size.
- Shape the dough: Once risen, roll the dough into circles about 8-10 inches in diameter on a floured surface to prevent sticking.
- Add fillings: Spread pizza sauce evenly on one half of each dough circle, then sprinkle mozzarella cheese and your choice of optional cooked fillings such as chicken, vegetables, or pepperoni.
- Fold and seal: Fold the dough over the fillings to create a half-moon shape. Press and crimp the edges firmly to seal and prevent the filling from leaking during baking.
- Bake the calzones: Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Place calzones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
- Cool and serve: Remove from oven and let cool slightly for about 5 minutes before slicing and serving warm.
Notes
- Seal edges well to prevent filling leakage during baking.
- Use a pizza stone or baking steel if available for an even crispier crust.
- Feel free to customize the fillings as per your taste preferences.
- For a crispier crust, brush the calzone surface with olive oil before baking.
