Description
Crispy baked mozzarella sticks are a healthier twist on the classic appetizer, coated in seasoned breadcrumbs and baked to golden perfection.
Ingredients
- 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Cooking spray or olive oil spray
Instructions
- Cut the mozzarella sticks in half to make 24 shorter sticks. Freeze for at least 1 hour or until solid.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Prepare three bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs mixed with water, and one with a mixture of breadcrumbs, Parmesan, garlic powder, and oregano.
- Dip each frozen cheese stick in flour, then egg, then breadcrumb mixture, pressing lightly to coat well.
- Place coated sticks on the prepared baking sheet. Lightly spray with cooking spray for crispiness.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes, turning halfway through, until golden and crisp. Do not overbake or cheese will leak out.
- Serve immediately with marinara sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Freezing the cheese before baking is essential to prevent melting too quickly.
- Double coat the sticks for extra crunch by repeating the egg and breadcrumb steps.
- Use panko breadcrumbs for an even crispier texture.
- Can be made ahead and frozen; bake directly from frozen when ready.
