A classic, thick, and hearty split pea soup infused with smoky ham flavor, perfect for warming up on cold days. This comforting American soup is easy to prepare and ideal for a nutritious meal.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 cup dried split peas
- 4 cups water or broth
- 1 cup carrots and celery, chopped
- ½ cup diced ham (optional)
- Salt & pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: In a large pot, add the dried split peas, water or broth, chopped carrots and celery, diced ham if using, and season with salt and pepper.
- Bring to Boil: Place the pot over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Simmer Soup: Reduce the heat to low, cover partially, and let the soup simmer gently for about 45 minutes or until the split peas are tender and the soup has thickened.
- Optional Puree: For a smoother texture, remove half of the soup and puree it using a blender or immersion blender, then stir it back into the pot.
- Adjust Seasoning and Serve: Taste the soup and adjust salt and pepper as needed before serving hot.
Notes
- Puree half the soup for a smoother texture if desired.
- Using broth instead of water enhances the flavor.
- Ham is optional but adds a smoky richness to the soup.
- This soup thickens as it cools; add water or broth to loosen if needed when reheating.
