Description
Chocolate pudding cake is a rich, old-fashioned dessert that magically creates its own warm chocolate sauce while baking. Featuring a soft cake layer on top with a gooey pudding underneath, this comforting dessert is especially delightful served warm with a scoop of ice cream.
Ingredients
Cake Batter
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ cup milk
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Pudding Topping
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1½ cups hot water
Instructions
- Prepare the Oven and Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients for Batter: In a bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- Add Wet Ingredients to Batter: Stir in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract into the dry ingredients until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.
- Spread Batter: Evenly spread the prepared batter into the greased baking dish, ensuring a flat, uniform layer.
- Prepare the Pudding Topping: In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder thoroughly.
- Sprinkle Topping Over Batter: Evenly sprinkle the brown sugar and cocoa powder mixture over the batter without stirring it in.
- Add Hot Water: Carefully pour the 1½ cups of hot water over the top of the sugar and cocoa powder mixture. Do not stir; the sauce will form underneath while baking.
- Bake the Cake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the cake is set on top and a toothpick inserted in the cake comes out mostly clean.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the cake to cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Serving warm is best to enjoy the gooey pudding and warm cake combination.
Notes

- Serve the cake warm with ice cream for the best texture and flavor.
- For extra richness, add chocolate chips into the batter before baking.
