Description

Chocolate pudding cake is a rich, old-fashioned dessert that magically creates its own warm chocolate sauce while baking. Featuring a soft cake layer on top with a gooey pudding underneath, this comforting dessert is especially delightful served warm with a scoop of ice cream.

Ingredients

Cake Batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Pudding Topping

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1½ cups hot water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oven and Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients for Batter: In a bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients to Batter: Stir in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract into the dry ingredients until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.
  4. Spread Batter: Evenly spread the prepared batter into the greased baking dish, ensuring a flat, uniform layer.
  5. Prepare the Pudding Topping: In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder thoroughly.
  6. Sprinkle Topping Over Batter: Evenly sprinkle the brown sugar and cocoa powder mixture over the batter without stirring it in.
  7. Add Hot Water: Carefully pour the 1½ cups of hot water over the top of the sugar and cocoa powder mixture. Do not stir; the sauce will form underneath while baking.
  8. Bake the Cake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the cake is set on top and a toothpick inserted in the cake comes out mostly clean.
  9. Cool and Serve: Allow the cake to cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Serving warm is best to enjoy the gooey pudding and warm cake combination.

Notes

  • The sauce forms underneath the cake while baking, so no stirring after adding water is needed.
  • Serve the cake warm with ice cream for the best texture and flavor.
  • For extra richness, add chocolate chips into the batter before baking.
  • Store any leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
