Description

A rich, moist, and decadent chocolate cake layered with creamy chocolate frosting — perfect for birthdays, celebrations, or when you simply need a chocolate fix.


Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk (or buttermilk)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup heavy cream (plus more as needed)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed until smooth.
  3. Stir in hot coffee (batter will be thin). Divide evenly between pans.
  4. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
  5. Make frosting: Beat butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, cocoa, cream, vanilla, and salt. Beat until fluffy and spreadable.
  6. Frost cake layers, stacking one on top of the other. Spread frosting over sides and top. Slice and enjoy!

Notes

  • Hot coffee enhances the chocolate flavor, but hot water works too.
  • For extra decadence, add chocolate ganache drizzle on top.
  • Can be baked as a sheet cake or cupcakes (adjust bake time accordingly).
