Description
A creamy and comforting Chicken Cordon Bleu Soup inspired by the classic dish, featuring shredded chicken, diced ham, and melted Swiss cheese in a rich, savory broth.
Ingredients
Meat and Cheese
- 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
- 1 cup diced ham
- 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded
Liquids
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 1 cup heavy cream or milk
Vegetables
- 1 onion, diced
Other
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp flour
- Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
- Sauté the Onion: In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Create the Roux: Sprinkle the flour over the cooked onions and stir continuously for 2 minutes to form a roux, which will help thicken the soup.
- Add Broth and Meats: Gradually pour in the chicken broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Then add the shredded chicken and diced ham. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook for 10 minutes to combine flavors.
- Incorporate Cream and Cheese: Lower the heat and slowly stir in the heavy cream (or milk) and shredded Swiss cheese. Continue stirring until the cheese melts completely and the soup is smooth and creamy.
- Season and Serve: Taste the soup and add salt and freshly ground black pepper to your preference. Serve the soup warm, garnished if desired.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use half Swiss cheese and half Gruyère cheese.
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley or crispy bacon bits for added texture and flavor.
- This soup can be made gluten-free by substituting the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
- Use heavy cream for a creamier texture or milk for a lighter version.
