Description

A creamy and comforting Chicken Cordon Bleu Soup inspired by the classic dish, featuring shredded chicken, diced ham, and melted Swiss cheese in a rich, savory broth.

Ingredients

Meat and Cheese

  • 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
  • 1 cup diced ham
  • 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded

Liquids

  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream or milk

Vegetables

  • 1 onion, diced

Other

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Sauté the Onion: In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Create the Roux: Sprinkle the flour over the cooked onions and stir continuously for 2 minutes to form a roux, which will help thicken the soup.
  3. Add Broth and Meats: Gradually pour in the chicken broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Then add the shredded chicken and diced ham. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook for 10 minutes to combine flavors.
  4. Incorporate Cream and Cheese: Lower the heat and slowly stir in the heavy cream (or milk) and shredded Swiss cheese. Continue stirring until the cheese melts completely and the soup is smooth and creamy.
  5. Season and Serve: Taste the soup and add salt and freshly ground black pepper to your preference. Serve the soup warm, garnished if desired.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use half Swiss cheese and half Gruyère cheese.
  • Garnish with chopped fresh parsley or crispy bacon bits for added texture and flavor.
  • This soup can be made gluten-free by substituting the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
  • Use heavy cream for a creamier texture or milk for a lighter version.
