Description

These meatball subs are hearty, cheesy, and loaded with saucy, tender meatballs tucked into toasted rolls. Perfect for an easy dinner, game day, or feeding a crowd, they come together quickly with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Meatballs and Sauce

  • 1216 cooked meatballs (homemade or store-bought)
  • 2 cups marinara sauce

Subs

  • 4 sub rolls or hoagie buns
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Cheeses

  • 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: sliced provolone cheese

Garnish

  • Optional: fresh basil or parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the subs.
  2. Warm Meatballs: Place the meatballs and marinara sauce in a saucepan over medium heat and warm until the meatballs are heated through, ensuring they are juicy and flavorful.
  3. Prepare Rolls: Slice the sub rolls lengthwise and arrange them on a baking sheet, then lightly brush the inside of each roll with olive oil to add flavor and help prevent sogginess.
  4. Assemble Subs: Evenly spoon the warmed meatballs and sauce into each prepared roll, distributing the meatballs and sauce evenly.
  5. Add Cheese: Top each filled roll with the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese. If desired, add sliced provolone cheese for extra cheesiness.
  6. Bake Subs: Bake the assembled subs in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes until the cheese has melted and is bubbly, indicating they are ready.
  7. Optional Broil: For a lightly toasted and golden top, broil the subs for an additional 1–2 minutes, watching carefully to avoid burning.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired, and serve the meatball subs warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use beef, turkey, or chicken meatballs based on your preference or dietary needs.
  • Lightly toasting the rolls before filling helps prevent subs from becoming soggy.
  • Adding sautéed peppers or onions can enhance the subs with extra flavor and texture.
  • Wrap any leftovers in foil and reheat them in the oven to maintain freshness and taste.
