Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (or melted butter)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a blend of both)
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for added flavor)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)
- 1 tablespoon fresh herbs (like rosemary or thyme, optional for garnish)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center, add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until the dough begins to form. Knead on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- After the dough rises, punch it down and knead in the shredded cheese and garlic powder (if using). Shape the dough into a round or oval loaf or individual rolls, placing them on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet. If using, sprinkle extra cheese on top.
- Cover and let the dough rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown and hollow when tapped on the bottom. For extra color, broil for the last 1-2 minutes.
- Let the bread cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh herbs and serve warm.
Notes
- For a spicier bread, add finely chopped jalapeños or red pepper flakes to the dough.
- Make it cheesier by adding extra cheese to the dough or on top during the second rise.
- This bread can be made ahead. Let the dough rise in the fridge overnight, then bring it to room temperature and bake.
- For a gluten-free version, use a gluten-free flour blend suitable for bread.
