Ingredients
Sausage Gravy
- 1 lb breakfast sausage
- 3 tbsp flour
- 2 cups milk
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp garlic powder
Casserole Base
- 1 can refrigerated biscuits
Optional Toppings
- 4–6 eggs
- Shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Cook the sausage: Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the breakfast sausage until fully browned and crumbly, breaking it apart as it cooks.
- Make the gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage, stirring constantly and cooking for about 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste.
- Add milk and season: Slowly pour in the milk while stirring to create a smooth gravy. Continue stirring and cook until the gravy thickens. Season with black pepper and garlic powder to taste.
- Prepare the biscuits: Cut the refrigerated biscuits into quarters and spread them evenly in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Assemble the casserole: Pour the warm sausage gravy evenly over the biscuit pieces in the baking dish.
- Add optional eggs and cheese: If using, crack the eggs directly on top of the casserole and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the surface.
- Bake: Place the casserole in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the eggs are cooked through and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Notes
- For a crispier top, bake the biscuit quarters for 10 minutes before adding the gravy.
- This casserole can be assembled in advance and baked when ready to serve.
