Description

Flavorful Japanese rice bowl topped with tender, thinly sliced beef cooked in a savory shiso garlic soy sauce, served over steamed rice for a satisfying and easy-to-make meal.

Ingredients

Beef & Sauce

  • 1 pound (450 g) thinly sliced beef
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon mirin
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons fresh shiso leaves, chopped (or basil as substitute)

Base

  • 2 cups cooked rice

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil: Warm 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat to prepare for sautéing the garlic and beef.
  2. Sauté the garlic: Add the minced garlic to the hot oil and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds to 1 minute, stirring constantly to avoid burning.
  3. Cook the beef: Add the thinly sliced beef to the pan, spreading it out and cooking until browned and no longer pink, about 4-5 minutes.
  4. Add sauce ingredients: Stir in 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 tablespoon mirin, and 1 teaspoon sugar, mixing well with the beef.
  5. Simmer the sauce: Cook everything together for 3–5 minutes more, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly and the flavors to meld.
  6. Prepare the rice bowls: Spoon the 2 cups of cooked rice evenly into four serving bowls.
  7. Assemble the donburi: Divide the cooked beef and sauce mixture on top of the rice in each bowl.
  8. Garnish and serve: Sprinkle the chopped fresh shiso leaves over the beef for aromatic flavor and serve immediately for best taste.

Notes

  • Basil can be used as a substitute if fresh shiso leaves are unavailable.
  • Serve the dish immediately to enjoy the optimal flavor and texture of the beef and sauce.
  • Optional: Sprinkle sesame seeds on top for added crunch and flavor.
