Description

A creamy, comforting barley porridge made with pearl barley, gently sweetened with honey and flavored with cinnamon, then topped with fresh mixed berries. This hearty, fiber-rich alternative to traditional oatmeal is perfect for a nourishing breakfast.

Ingredients

Grains and Liquids

  • 1 cup pearl barley
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cup milk (or plant-based milk)

Flavorings

  • 1 tbsp honey
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Toppings

  • 1 cup mixed berries (fresh or frozen)

Instructions

  1. Rinse Barley: Thoroughly rinse 1 cup of pearl barley under cold running water to remove any impurities and excess starch, then drain.
  2. Cook Barley: In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed barley with 3 cups of water and bring to a boil over high heat.
  3. Simmer: Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover partially, and simmer for 35 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the barley is tender and the mixture has thickened to a porridge consistency.
  4. Add Flavorings: Stir in 1 cup of milk (or plant milk), 1 tablespoon of honey, ½ teaspoon of cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Continue cooking on low heat for an additional 5 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent sticking, allowing the flavors to meld and the porridge to become creamy.
  5. Serve: Spoon the hot barley porridge into serving bowls, topping each with 1 cup of mixed fresh or frozen berries and extra honey if desired for additional sweetness.

Notes

  • Soaking the barley overnight can reduce the cooking time significantly.
  • The prepared porridge can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 4 days and reheated gently with a splash of milk or water.
  • Use plant-based milk such as almond, oat, or soy milk to make this recipe vegan.
  • Adjust sweetness by varying the amount of honey to suit your taste.
